Strong to severe thunderstorms possible across Virginia Friday

VIRGINIA — Parts of western and northern Virginia are under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms Friday, June 26, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters say scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening as disturbances move east across the Ohio Valley and Appalachians. While the greatest severe weather threat is expected farther west, a few storms that reach Virginia could become strong enough to produce isolated severe weather.

SPC Day 1 Outlook

The primary threats include damaging wind gusts, though isolated hail cannot be ruled out. The Storm Prediction Center said several clusters of thunderstorms are expected to move east through the day and into the evening, with some maintaining enough strength to produce locally severe conditions.

Warm, humid air and daytime heating will help fuel thunderstorm development across portions of the Commonwealth before activity gradually weakens overnight.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared to take shelter if severe thunderstorm warnings are issued.
