OHIO — A person who walked away from a crash on Columbus’ Northeast Side early Monday was struck and killed by a passing vehicle in what was initially reported as a hit-skip crash, according to police.

The incident happened shortly after midnight at the intersection of Morse Road and Sunbury Road.

Police said an adult involved in an earlier crash exited the vehicle they had been driving and began walking away, heading south into the eastbound lanes of Morse Road just east of Sunbury Road.

At the same time, a black sedan was traveling eastbound on Morse Road and struck the pedestrian, knocking the victim into the westbound left-turn lane. The sedan initially continued driving from the scene.

Columbus Fire personnel transported the victim to Riverside Methodist Hospital, where the person later died from their injuries.

Police said that shortly after the crash, the driver of the black sedan contacted Columbus Police Radio to report that their vehicle had been involved in the collision. The driver later met with detectives from the Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit.

The Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
