Severe storms could bring damaging winds to parts of Tennessee on Monday

TENNESSEE — Parts of Tennessee are at risk for severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the southern Appalachians, including eastern Tennessee, under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

Forecasters say scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop and strengthen Monday afternoon and continue into the evening. The primary threat is expected to be damaging straight-line winds capable of downing trees and power lines.

An isolated tornado also cannot be ruled out, particularly across the eastern part of the state near the southern Appalachian region, where atmospheric conditions may become favorable for rotating storms embedded within a line of thunderstorms.

The severe weather threat is expected to develop as an approaching cold front interacts with warm, humid air across the region. Increasing wind speeds aloft will help thunderstorms organize and strengthen as they move through eastern Tennessee during the afternoon and evening hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, as conditions may change quickly throughout the day.
