ILLINOIS — The Storm Prediction Center is warning that parts of Illinois could see severe thunderstorms on Sunday as a developing storm system moves across the Midwest.
According to the agency’s Day 3 Convective Outlook, much of central and southern Illinois is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe weather on Sunday, June 21. The surrounding areas of the state remain under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5), meaning isolated severe storms are also possible.

Forecasters say the greatest threats in Illinois will be damaging wind gusts and large hail, although a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out if storms become more organized. The severe weather potential is expected as warm, humid air interacts with an approaching weather system during the afternoon and evening hours.
The Slight Risk area also extends into portions of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky and surrounding states, where the Storm Prediction Center expects a higher concentration of severe thunderstorms.
Residents across Illinois are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts over the weekend, review their severe weather safety plans, and have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings if conditions worsen Sunday. The forecast may be refined as confidence increases and additional outlooks are issued closer to the event.
