FLORIDA — A 14-year-old Lake Asbury boy was killed in a three-vehicle crash involving a motorized scooter late Thursday night in Clay County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. on Sandridge Road west of Verbena Parkway.
Troopers said the teen was stopped on a motorized scooter in a westbound travel lane on an unlit section of Sandridge Road. Investigators said the scooter did not have any lighting equipment operating at the time of the crash.
According to FHP, a 16-year-old driver from Green Cove Springs was traveling westbound when he did not see the stopped scooter and was unable to stop in time. The front right side of the sedan struck the scooter.
A third vehicle, an SUV driven by a 17-year-old girl from Green Cove Springs, then struck the rear of the sedan following the initial collision.
The 14-year-old was thrown from the scooter and suffered fatal injuries. Authorities said the drivers of the sedan and SUV were not injured.
Residents who live near the crash site said they have raised concerns about traffic safety along Sandridge Road, citing speeding vehicles and a lack of safety improvements.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
