OHIO — A pilot was killed Thursday morning after a small plane crashed into a house shortly after taking off from the Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport, according to authorities.

The crash was reported just after 10:30 a.m. off Bennett School House Road near the airport in Minford. Scioto County Emergency Management Director Larry Mullins said the aircraft experienced a problem during takeoff before crashing into a home and sparking a large fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft was a Cirrus SR-20. According to the agency, the plane crashed into a house in Wheelersburg after departing from the airport. The FAA said the pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft.

The pilot was the fatality reported in the crash.

People were inside the home when the plane struck the structure, but Mullins said they were able to escape safely.

Multiple fire departments, emergency medical crews and the Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, with the NTSB leading the investigation. Authorities noted that the information released so far is preliminary and subject to change.
