Thousands without power in Iowa

IOWA — More than 18,000 utility customers across Iowa remain without electricity Thursday morning as outages continue to affect communities across the state.

According to PowerOutage.us, 18,688 customers are currently without power, impacting about 1.18% of the more than 1.58 million customers tracked statewide.

Polk County is reporting the largest number of outages, with 6,422 customers without service. Mills County follows with 4,153 outages, while Union County has 1,071 customers without power. Other heavily affected counties include Clarke County with 925 outages, Cass County with 738, Wayne County with 585 and Fremont County with 480.

Mills County is among the hardest-hit areas by percentage, with nearly half of tracked customers, 49.66%, currently without electricity. Cass County is reporting 25.81% of customers without power, while Clarke County is at 21.49%.

MidAmerican Energy Company is reporting the highest number of outages among utilities, with 12,319 customers without service. Alliant Energy has 5,190 outages, while several electric cooperatives are also reporting scattered outages across their service territories.

Iowa currently ranks third in the nation for both the total number of power outages and the percentage of customers affected, according to the outage tracking website.

Utility crews are continuing restoration efforts throughout the state. Residents are advised to report outages to their electric provider and stay clear of any downed power lines.
