The possibility of another Buc-ee’s opening in Wisconsin

0

WISCONSIN — Wisconsin is preparing to welcome its first Buc-ee’s location after the company announced plans for a major travel center in Oak Creek along Interstate 94 south of Milwaukee. The project will mark Buc-ee’s entry into Wisconsin and its continued expansion into the Upper Midwest.

While the Oak Creek location will serve one of the busiest transportation corridors in the state, several other regions could potentially support additional Buc-ee’s locations if the Texas-based travel center chain decides to expand further in Wisconsin.

Although no additional Wisconsin stores have been announced, the company’s expansion strategy provides clues about where future locations could logically be built.

Why Another Wisconsin Location Makes Sense

Buc-ee’s typically targets major interstate corridors with high traffic volumes, strong tourism activity and sufficient land for its large-format travel centers.

Wisconsin is crossed by several heavily traveled highways, including Interstate 94, Interstate 90, Interstate 43, Interstate 39 and U.S. Highway 41. The state also attracts millions of visitors annually to destinations such as Wisconsin Dells, Door County, Green Bay and the Northwoods.

While Oak Creek will provide coverage for southeastern Wisconsin and the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor, much of the state remains outside the reach of the planned location.

Most Likely Wisconsin Locations

Wisconsin Dells Area (Interstate 90/94)

The Wisconsin Dells area may be the strongest candidate for a future Wisconsin Buc-ee’s.

Located along Interstate 90/94, Wisconsin Dells is one of the Midwest’s largest tourism destinations and attracts millions of visitors each year. The area combines heavy interstate traffic with a year-round tourism economy, making it closely resemble other markets where Buc-ee’s has successfully expanded.

A location near a major interstate interchange would serve travelers heading between Madison, Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Chicago.

Eau Claire Area (Interstate 94)

Western Wisconsin remains another strong possibility.

Eau Claire sits along Interstate 94 between the Twin Cities and central Wisconsin and serves as a major regional hub. The corridor experiences substantial passenger and commercial traffic, making it a logical fit for Buc-ee’s expansion model.

Green Bay Area (Interstate 41)

Green Bay could also attract interest because of its tourism industry, professional football-related travel and regional importance.

A location on the outskirts of the metropolitan area along Interstate 41 would serve travelers heading throughout northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Madison Area (Interstate 90, Interstate 94 and U.S. 151)

The Madison region sits at the intersection of several major transportation routes and continues to experience population growth.

While Buc-ee’s generally avoids dense urban centers, a site outside the city near one of the interstate corridors could provide access to both local residents and interstate travelers.

La Crosse Area (Interstate 90)

The Interstate 90 corridor near La Crosse presents another opportunity.

The area serves travelers moving between Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois and experiences substantial long-distance traffic. A Buc-ee’s there would provide coverage in western Wisconsin and along one of the state’s busiest highways.

Less Likely but Possible

Door County attracts large numbers of tourists, but the region lacks the interstate access that Buc-ee’s typically prioritizes.

Similarly, northern Wisconsin sees strong seasonal tourism but generally does not have the year-round traffic volumes found along the state’s major interstate corridors.

What Happens Next?

For now, Buc-ee’s remains focused on bringing its first Wisconsin location to Oak Creek. The project represents a significant step in the company’s expansion into the Upper Midwest and will place the brand along one of the region’s busiest travel routes.

However, Wisconsin’s combination of tourism, interstate traffic and growing metropolitan areas suggests the state could eventually support more than one Buc-ee’s location. If future expansion occurs, Wisconsin Dells appears to offer the strongest combination of traffic, tourism and visibility.

Eau Claire, Green Bay and the Madison area also remain realistic possibilities based on the company’s established site-selection patterns.

While no second Wisconsin Buc-ee’s has been announced, the state’s transportation advantages and tourism economy make additional expansion a plausible long-term possibility.
