MISSISSIPPI — A Jackson woman is facing multiple charges after deputies said they discovered approximately $400,000 worth of illegal drugs during a traffic stop near the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.
According to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were conducting a roadside safety checkpoint on Highway 468 shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday near the prison when they encountered a vehicle driven by Rachel Marie Thomas.
Investigators said deputies developed probable cause to search the vehicle for narcotics after speaking with Thomas.
The search allegedly uncovered several pounds of marijuana, multiple doses of THC wax, methamphetamine, suspected liquid fentanyl and oxycodone. Deputies also reported finding multiple cellphones, a large quantity of drug paraphernalia, two large bottles of promethazine and alcohol-filled water bottles.
Authorities said their investigation determined Thomas was traveling to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility with the intention of introducing the items into the prison system.
Thomas has been charged with trafficking a controlled substance, possession of controlled substances and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She is being held at the Rankin County Adult Detention Center on a $1.1 million bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
