TEXAS — Two San Antonio residents were arrested on felony drug charges after a traffic stop in Fayette County led to the discovery of more than 20 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, authorities said.
According to Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek, Deputy Cody Williams stopped a dark-colored Nissan SUV traveling westbound on Interstate 10 near mile marker 664 outside Flatonia at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators said the driver, identified as 24-year-old Roland R. Champion Jr., was operating the vehicle without a driver’s license. During the stop, deputies became suspicious after Champion and passenger Emily Guadalupe Mendoza, 22, reportedly provided inconsistent travel timelines.
Authorities said Champion declined a request to search the vehicle. A short time later, Schulenburg Police Officer Byron Powe arrived with K-9 Semper, who conducted an exterior sniff of the SUV and alerted to the presence of narcotics.
The alert gave deputies probable cause to search the vehicle. During the search, Williams found a black trash bag behind the driver’s seat containing nine bundles of a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Investigators said the suspected methamphetamine weighed approximately 20.2 pounds.
Champion and Mendoza were arrested and charged with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance. Both were transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.
The investigation remains ongoing.
