GEORGIA — Cobb County police officers shot and killed a 43-year-old man after a reckless-driving incident escalated into a crash and armed confrontation late Friday night on Windy Hill Road, authorities said.
According to Cobb County police, officers attempted to stop a dark Cadillac SUV around 10:22 p.m. after reports of reckless driving. The driver, later identified as Gregory Hill Jr. of Austell, fled from officers before losing control of the vehicle and flipping into a residential yard near Osborne Court.
Police said Hill initially remained inside the overturned SUV and ignored commands to exit the vehicle. When he eventually attempted to climb out while armed with a handgun, investigators say he fired at officers. Police returned fire, striking Hill.
Authorities said the incident led to a prolonged standoff that lasted about 90 minutes. Officers negotiated with Hill while he remained barricaded before the confrontation ended when he displayed a weapon, prompting an officer to fire.
Hill was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and is conducting an independent review of the shooting. GBI agents spent Saturday processing the scene and collecting evidence, including weapons involved in the confrontation.
Police have not disclosed how many shots were fired by either Hill or the officers. Investigators also have not released details about what caused Hill to lose control of the SUV or why he initially fled from the attempted traffic stop.
Once the GBI completes its investigation, the case will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review and any potential legal determinations.
