OHIO — A 15-year-old girl died Sunday after she and her family became stranded while kayaking on the Licking River, according to the Madison Township Fire Department.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. Sunday following reports that a family of five had become stranded on a log jam in the river.
According to the fire department, firefighters responding to the scene found two adults trapped on a log jam and two kayakers clinging to debris in the river about a mile east of Staddens Bridge.
Rescue efforts were launched to reach the family members and bring them to safety. During the incident, a 15-year-old girl was reported missing in the water.
Authorities later confirmed the teen had drowned.
Additional details about the circumstances leading up to the incident and the identity of the victim have not been released.
The Madison Township Fire Department and other responding agencies continue to investigate the incident.
