SOUTH CAROLINA — A driver was airlifted to a hospital after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening on Interstate 95 in Colleton County, authorities said.
According to Colleton County Fire Rescue, emergency crews and the South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the crash in a construction zone on southbound I-95.
Officials said a Dodge Durango collided with a stopped Cadillac Escalade that was towing a boat. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and came to rest blocking all southbound lanes of the interstate.
Firefighter paramedics treated the driver of the Durango for multiple traumatic injuries at the scene before the driver was airlifted to the trauma center at HCA Trident Hospital in North Charleston.
Authorities said the two occupants of the Escalade declined medical treatment.
The crash caused southbound I-95 to be closed for about an hour, backing up traffic for several miles.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
