
ILLINOIS — A construction worker was killed in a crash overnight on Interstate 74 in Champaign, according to Illinois State Police.
Troopers said the crash happened around 3:35 a.m. Wednesday on I-74 eastbound at milepost 179 near the southbound exit to Interstate 57.
Investigators said a pickup truck pulling a trailer struck the worker in an active construction zone. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released the victim’s identity.
Illinois State Police said I-74 eastbound in the area remains closed for several hours while crews investigate the crash scene. Traffic is being diverted onto I-57 southbound.
Drivers traveling south on I-57 are being advised to use Curtis Road to access Champaign, while northbound I-57 traffic can use Curtis Road or the Market Street exit.
Motorists traveling between Mahomet and Champaign are urged to seek alternate routes and expect delays.
The crash remains under investigation.
