Multiple schools in Pennsylvania announce dismissals due to power outage

PENNSYLVANIA — The Bermudian Springs School District dismissed students early Tuesday after a tractor-trailer crash caused a power outage in York Springs, Pennsylvania.

According to the district, the secondary school dismissed at 11:15 a.m., while the elementary school dismissed at 12:15 p.m.

The outage happened after a tractor-trailer struck a utility pole on the 6700 block of Carlisle Pike shortly after 9 a.m. Downed power lines reportedly landed on top of the vehicle.

FirstEnergy, which owns Met-Ed, said crews de-energized the wires to allow emergency responders to safely rescue the driver.

“In coordination with emergency responders, we deenergized those wires to facilitate the rescue of the driver, and that outage is currently affecting the school,” the company said in a statement released around 11:15 a.m. “Our crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible, and we expect to restore service to the school within an hour.”

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the crash.
