GEORGIA — A bystander was killed Monday afternoon after a pursuit crash in Fulton County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

State troopers said the incident began around 2:40 p.m. when a trooper attempted to stop a Hyundai Elantra traveling west on Interstate 20 for speeding. Authorities said the driver was traveling 90 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Investigators said the driver initially slowed down before speeding away, crossing multiple lanes of traffic, exiting at Boulevard East and merging back onto the interstate, nearly causing a crash.

According to the state patrol, the pursuit was later taken over by a second trooper after the first trooper was unable to continue safely.

Authorities said the driver exited onto the Hill Street ramp at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle, crossed Hill Street and crashed into a gas station parking lot.

Troopers said the vehicle struck a parked car, fatally injuring 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson, who was standing beside the vehicle.

The suspect, a passenger and the driver of the parked car were all taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities identified the suspect as Fre’shun White. Troopers said White faces charges including first-degree vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle.

In a statement, the Georgia State Patrol said the incident is a reminder of the dangers caused when drivers flee from law enforcement.
