MISSISSIPPI — A Louisiana man died Friday evening after being struck by two vehicles while fleeing from a traffic stop on Interstate 55 in Copiah County, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The incident happened around 5:21 p.m. on Interstate 55 South near the 68-mile marker.
Investigators said a state trooper initially stopped a 2004 Honda Sport motorcycle for a tag violation. The motorcycle was driven by 40-year-old Shane Hebert of Livingston.
During the stop, troopers discovered Hebert had an active warrant out of Louisiana. Authorities said when the trooper attempted to detain him, Hebert became combative.
According to MHP, the trooper attempted to deploy a Taser, and a physical altercation followed before Hebert fled the scene on foot, running southbound along Interstate 55.
Investigators said Hebert was struck by a 2020 Nissan Rogue while running along the interstate. Authorities said he then crossed the median into the northbound lanes, where he was struck a second time by a 2014 Chrysler Pacifica.
Officials said neither the trooper nor the drivers involved were injured.
Hebert suffered fatal injuries in the second collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
