OHIO — A man is in custody after fleeing from an Ohio State Highway Patrol traffic stop in a stolen vehicle Thursday afternoon, according to authorities.
The Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the incident began after a trooper spotted a Chevrolet Impala illegally changing lanes before taking the Exit 50B off-ramp.
According to investigators, the Impala initially stopped under the Interstate 75 overpass. However, as the trooper approached the vehicle, the driver sped away and re-entered the interstate. Troopers later lost sight of the vehicle, leading authorities to cancel the pursuit.
Minutes later, the Impala was found crashed near the intersection at Edwin C. Moses Boulevard. Authorities said the driver had fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.
Witnesses told troopers the suspect was running north toward the University of Dayton campus. Troopers and Dayton police officers searched the area and eventually located the man fleeing through the university’s Jerry Von Mohr Practice Facility.
Investigators later confirmed the Impala had been reported stolen.
The 27-year-old suspect is being held on a felony warrant. The investigation remains ongoing.
