
INDIANA — An inmate died Thursday evening following an altercation at the Johnson County Jail, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said the incident happened around 12:37 p.m. Thursday at the jail in Johnson County, Indiana. The inmate was initially taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital before being transferred to IU Methodist Hospital for further treatment.
The sheriff’s office said IU Methodist Hospital notified investigators at approximately 6:56 p.m. that the inmate had died.
Authorities said investigators are continuing to gather facts and evidence related to the incident. The suspect involved is cooperating with law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will determine whether criminal charges will be filed in the case.
Officials have not released the names of the deceased inmate or the suspect pending review by the prosecutor’s office.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
