ALABAMA — A Huntsville man has been arrested after authorities seized more than a kilogram of fentanyl that investigators say could have produced up to 500,000 potentially lethal doses.
According to law enforcement officials, 45-year-old Michael Fitts was arrested May 8 following a month-long investigation into what authorities described as a large-scale narcotics operation.
Fitts is charged with drug trafficking and is being held in the Madison County Jail on a $1.5 million bond.
The arrest was made through a joint operation involving the North Alabama Drug Task Force and Region F of the Alabama Drug Enforcement Task Force.
Investigators said Fitts was stopped while transporting approximately 1.035 kilograms of fentanyl into Huntsville. Authorities estimated the drugs had a street value of about $207,000 and were intended for distribution across multiple North Alabama counties.
Lt. Joseph Kennington, commander of the North Alabama Drug Task Force, said the seizure prevented a dangerous amount of fentanyl from reaching communities across the region.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
