
OHIO — A 63-year-old man from Massillon was killed Sunday night after being struck by a train in Canton, according to police.
The crash happened around 10 p.m. near Maryland Avenue SW and Navarre Road SW in Stark County.
Police identified the victim as George Smith.
Investigators said Smith was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Maryland Avenue SW when the vehicle became stuck on railroad tracks. Authorities believe Smith was attempting to get out of the truck when it was struck by the train.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Canton Metro Crash Team is investigating the incident. Police said drugs or alcohol are not suspected to have been a factor for the train engineer. It remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role for Smith.
