OKLAHOMA — Schools across parts of Oklahoma could face closures or schedule changes Monday as forecasters warn of a significant severe weather threat that may bring damaging storms, power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, much of Oklahoma is under a slight risk for severe thunderstorms Monday, while portions of northern Oklahoma are included in an enhanced risk area.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

Forecasters said numerous severe thunderstorms are expected to develop Monday along a cold front and dryline stretching from the Great Lakes into the southern Plains. The forecast includes the potential for damaging wind gusts, very large hail, tornadoes and torrential rainfall.

The Storm Prediction Center specifically listed Oklahoma City among the larger population centers within the slight risk area.

Meteorologists warned that if storms repeatedly track across the same areas, flooding and dangerous road conditions could develop quickly. Strong winds may also bring down trees and power lines, potentially causing widespread power outages and structural damage.

Those threats could force some Oklahoma school districts to close Monday, delay classes or dismiss students early if conditions deteriorate overnight or during the school day. School officials are expected to closely monitor updated forecasts and any watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said storm development in Oklahoma remains somewhat uncertain because of limited forcing along the dryline, but any storms that do form could rapidly become severe with a threat for tornadoes and very large hail.
