OHIO — A Lorain woman is celebrating a life-changing lottery win after purchasing several scratch-off tickets during a stop at a local gas station.
Emily said she stopped at a gas station to buy fuel for her fiancé’s chainsaw after a tree had fallen onto neighbors’ vehicles. While waiting in line, she noticed the customer ahead of her buying lottery tickets and decided to purchase several scratch-offs herself.
Later that evening, Emily said she did not win on any of the tickets until scratching the final one. After matching the number “2,” she realized she had won the game’s $1 million top prize.
Emily said she initially could not believe what she was seeing and continued checking the ticket before showing it to her fiancé. The couple later returned to the store where the win was confirmed.
She said the timing of the win was especially meaningful with Mother’s Day recently passing and her birthday approaching. Emily said she and her family had been hoping to move out of their apartment, and the prize money will allow them to purchase their first home. She added that her son is excited about having his own room and a yard.
Emily selected the lump-sum cash option of $500,000. After mandatory federal and state taxes, she will receive approximately $366,250.
The winning ticket was sold at Valero #048511.
The $1,000,000 Holiday Wish game is a $20 scratch-off from the Ohio Lottery. As of May 13, one top prize remains in the game.
According to the Ohio Lottery, the organization has contributed more than $34 billion to education since 1974.
