TEXAS — A Cameron woman died and four other people were injured following a five-vehicle crash Monday morning in Milam County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS troopers responded around 9 a.m. May 11 to the crash on U.S. 77 near County Road 203 Loop, where traffic had been stopped by a construction flagger due to a Texas Department of Transportation pavement project near Cameron.
Authorities said the roadway had been reduced to one lane, with vehicles being guided through the work zone by a pilot vehicle.
Investigators said a 2018 Dodge SUV driven by a 40-year-old man from Killeen was approaching the stopped traffic when the driver failed to control speed and struck the rear of a stopped 2023 Chevrolet SUV.
The Chevrolet was driven by Amelia Reyes Mendoza, 68, of Cameron, DPS said.
The initial collision caused a chain-reaction crash involving three additional vehicles.
According to DPS, five people were transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple with injuries ranging from non-incapacitating to incapacitating.
Mendoza later died from her injuries and was pronounced dead.
The crash remains under investigation, and authorities said next of kin have been notified.
