
INDIANA — A 51-year-old Muncie man was fatally shot by police early Saturday after allegedly attempting to break into a home, according to Indiana State Police.
Officers with the Muncie Police Department were dispatched around 2:15 a.m. May 9 to the 3000 block of West Oaklyn Avenue, near West Jackson Street and Tillotson Avenue, following reports of a man trying to break into a residence.
According to state police, officers arrived and made contact with the suspect, a 51-year-old man from Muncie.
During the encounter, investigators said the man attempted to flee in a 2003 Chevrolet pickup truck and drove directly toward a Muncie police officer.
Police said the officer fired his department-issued weapon, striking the man at least once.
State police said the man continued driving away from the scene before crashing near South Tillotson Avenue and West Godman Avenue. He was pronounced dead after the crash.
Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting. When the investigation is complete, findings will be submitted to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The Muncie Police Department, Delaware County Coroner’s Office and Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office assisted in the investigation.
