Multiple Tennessee residents incorrectly billed for water usage

TENNESSEE — Residents in the Tennessee city of Greenbrier may have been incorrectly billed for water usage after a months-long audit uncovered errors in the city’s meter reading process.

According to city officials, the internal audit found that some water meters were under-read while others were over-read because of human error during meter readings.

In a statement posted on Facebook, city leaders said the inaccuracies were not intentional but acknowledged the city’s responsibility to provide accurate utility billing.

“Some meters were under-read while others have been over-read,” the city said. “While this was not intentional, we recognize that it is our duty to ensure accuracy, accountability, and trust in all city services—especially those that directly affect our residents’ daily lives.”

The city said officials have already begun implementing corrective measures, including additional training and oversight for meter readers, expanded verification procedures, ongoing billing audits and a transition to an electronic water metering system.

City leaders said affected accounts are currently being reviewed and residents impacted by the billing issues will be assisted on a case-by-case basis.

“We are committed to restoring your trust and ensuring this issue does not happen again,” the city said.

Residents who believe their water bills may be inaccurate are encouraged to contact Greenbrier City Hall at 615-643-4531.
