INDIANA — A 73-year-old Upland man died Monday morning after a crash in Grant County that investigators believe was caused by a medical emergency.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, emergency dispatchers received a call around 10:38 a.m. reporting a vehicle that had struck a utility pole near the intersection of 11120 South and 1100 East in a rural area of the county.

Deputies arrived to find the driver, identified as John M. Walters, unresponsive inside the vehicle. First responders performed CPR while awaiting the arrival of an air medical helicopter.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Walters was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:38 a.m.

Authorities said the vehicle sustained minimal damage and there was no significant intrusion into the passenger compartment. Based on those findings, investigators believe Walters suffered a medical issue prior to the crash.

The Grant County Coroner’s Office is conducting the death investigation. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
