FLORIDA — A Wellington High School student is facing criminal charges after bringing a firearm onto campus, according to school officials.
The Palm Beach County School District said the incident occurred when the student arrived late to school and passed through the campus’ single point of entry security screening. A metal detector was triggered, prompting administrators to conduct a follow-up search.
During that search, school officials discovered a gun inside the student’s backpack. The weapon was immediately confiscated without incident, and school police took the student into custody.
Officials said the firearm was never displayed or used in a threatening manner. No injuries were reported, and school administrators emphasized that students and staff remained safe throughout the incident.
In a letter sent to parents and guardians, school leaders said the situation was handled quickly and in accordance with established safety protocols. The district also noted that possession of a weapon on school grounds is a felony and that it intends to pursue criminal charges in such cases.
There was no disruption to the school day, and scheduled activities, including AICE assessments, continued as planned.
Because the case remains under active investigation, additional details have not been released.
