INDIANA — Tens of thousands of residents across Indiana are without electricity Monday evening following severe storms that moved through the region.
According to PowerOutage.us, at least 76,160 homes and businesses are currently without power statewide, accounting for about 2.3% of the more than 3.2 million customers tracked. Indiana ranks among the hardest-hit states, with one of the highest percentages of customers affected nationwide.
Northern Indiana has seen the most significant impacts. Lake County reported the highest number of outages, with more than 26,000 customers without power — roughly 17% of those tracked in the county. Porter and LaPorte counties also reported widespread outages, with more than 10,000 and 9,900 customers affected, respectively.
Additional outages have been reported in St. Joseph, Jackson and Marion counties.
Northern Indiana Public Service Company reported the largest number of outages among utilities, with more than 46,000 customers without electricity. Other providers, including Indiana Michigan Power and Duke Energy, also reported thousands of outages.
The outages are believed to be the result of strong storms that brought damaging winds and heavy rain, which can knock down trees and power lines.
Utility crews are working to restore power, but no estimated restoration times have been announced.
Residents are urged to avoid downed power lines and report outages to their utility providers. Officials also recommend preparing for extended outages by having emergency supplies, including flashlights, batteries and nonperishable food.
