Multiple schools in Mississippi could close Tuesday

MISSISSIPPI — A developing severe weather system expected to move into Mississippi on Tuesday is raising concerns that some schools could close or dismiss early due to potentially dangerous conditions.

The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed northern Mississippi under an “enhanced risk” for severe thunderstorms, with much of the rest of the state under a “slight risk.” Forecasters warn the storms could bring large to very large hail, damaging winds and the possibility of tornadoes.

SPC Day 2 Outlook

The severe weather is expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening, a time frame that could directly impact school dismissal and after-school activities.

School districts across the region are closely monitoring the forecast, as strong storms could lead to widespread power outages, downed trees and flooded roadways. Those hazards can make it difficult or unsafe for buses to operate and for students and staff to travel.

Heavy rainfall may also lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying or poor drainage areas, further complicating transportation routes.

As a result, some districts may choose to cancel classes, shift to remote learning or dismiss students early to avoid travel during the most dangerous conditions.

Emergency management officials are urging families to stay alert for potential schedule changes and to have contingency plans in place.

Forecasters say storms could organize into clusters or lines as they move through the region, increasing the risk for widespread wind damage into the evening hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
