GEORGIA — A Fulton County woman is facing multiple animal cruelty charges after authorities say they discovered dozens of animals living in unsanitary conditions inside an Alpharetta home.
According to the Fulton County Police Department, officers rescued 24 animals — including 17 dogs and seven cats — from the residence on Compass Pointe Crossing earlier this month. Investigators said the home was in such poor condition that responding officers treated it as a hazardous environment and wore protective gear, including face masks, before entering.
Police said they could smell urine and feces from outside the home. Once inside, officers reported that the floors and furniture were covered in waste, with animals found throughout the house, including inside cupboards and confined to rooms filled with trash.
Officials said many of the animals showed signs of neglect, including infections, severe matting and hair loss. Some animals were reportedly unable to stand properly due to feces matted around their paws.
Authorities identified the tenant as Diane Dodgen. According to investigators, she told officers she had become overwhelmed while caring for the animals after suffering a stroke. However, police said the conditions appeared to have developed over an extended period of time.
Dodgen was arrested and charged with 24 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. She is also facing eviction, authorities said.
The rescued animals have been taken into county custody, where they are receiving medical treatment and evaluation. Officials said some of the animals may eventually be placed up for adoption.
Police said the case highlights the importance of seeking help when pet owners are no longer able to care for their animals, noting that local animal services can assist with rehoming.
