Multiple schools in Kentucky could close next week

KENTUCKY — Schools across parts of Kentucky could face closures or early dismissals Monday as a significant severe weather threat develops across the region, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

Forecasters say widespread strong to severe thunderstorms are likely Monday afternoon and evening across the lower Ohio Valley, which includes much of Kentucky. The system could bring damaging winds, large hail and possible tornadoes, along with periods of heavy rainfall.

SPC Day 3 Outlook

While the highest risk area is centered farther west, Kentucky remains within a broader zone where organized storms are expected to develop and move through during key travel times, including afternoon dismissal hours.

School districts typically monitor these types of forecasts closely and may adjust schedules if conditions worsen. Officials could opt for early dismissals, cancellations or a shift to remote learning to keep buses off the roads during severe weather.

Potential impacts include power outages, downed trees and power lines, and flooded roadways — all of which can make it unsafe for students and staff to travel. Strong winds could also create hazardous conditions around school buildings and outdoor areas.

Emergency managers encourage families to stay alert for updates from local school districts and have plans in place in case schedules change with little notice.

Forecasters note that storm timing and intensity could still shift, but residents are urged to remain prepared for rapidly changing conditions and possible disruptions across Kentucky.
