NORTH CAROLINA — A 58-year-old man is facing multiple charges after deputies discovered explosive devices, drugs and a firearm during a traffic stop, authorities said.

According to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Scott Thompson was arrested Friday, April 17, after deputies pulled over his black Ford Mustang for erratic driving.

During the stop, deputies determined Thompson was driving with a suspended license and conducted a search of the vehicle.

Investigators said the search uncovered several improvised explosive devices. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation bomb squad responded and safely secured the devices without incident.

After the explosives were removed, deputies searched the vehicle again and found methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a firearm.

Thompson was charged with 10 counts of possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is being held at the Alexander County Detention Center on a $690,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday in district court.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could be filed, authorities said.
