MICHIGAN — A driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 196 was killed in a late-night crash Sunday involving two semi-trucks, according to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the crash occurred April 19 near Saugatuck. Another motorist called 911 around 11:40 p.m. to report a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-196.
Officers with Douglas police responded and located the crash approximately two miles south of the Saugatuck exit 41. Authorities said the wrong-way vehicle collided with two semi-tractor trailers.
Emergency crews removed the driver from the vehicle and provided medical aid, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of both semi-trucks were not injured.
Investigators said alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash.
The highway was closed for several hours as crews worked the scene and conducted an investigation.
Agencies assisting included Saugatuck Township and Graafschap firefighters, Douglas and Holland police, Life EMS, and the Allegan County Accident Reconstruction Team.
The crash remains under investigation.
