MICHIGAN — A widespread freeze warning is in effect across much of Michigan overnight into Monday morning, bringing the potential for icy roads, isolated snow showers and possible school delays or closures on April 20.

According to the National Weather Service, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 21 to 23 degrees are expected from 11 p.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday across large portions of the state. Impacted areas include west and central Michigan counties such as Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Allegan, Barry, Eaton and Ingham, along with major cities including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Muskegon.

Additional freeze warnings extend into southeast Michigan, including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Pontiac and Monroe, where similarly cold conditions are expected overnight.

Forecasters warn that any moisture left on roadways from recent precipitation could freeze overnight, particularly on bridges, overpasses and untreated secondary roads. This could create slick and hazardous travel conditions during the Monday morning commute.

While the primary concern is the freeze, some areas — especially across western and central Michigan — could see isolated flurries or light snow showers early Monday. Although little to no accumulation is expected, even light snow combined with freezing temperatures could reduce visibility and contribute to icy patches.

The combination of freezing temperatures and potentially slick roadways may prompt some school districts, particularly in rural areas, to consider delays or closures Monday morning.

In addition to travel concerns, officials warn that frost and freezing conditions could damage crops, sensitive vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing.

Residents are urged to take precautions, including protecting plants, covering pipes and allowing extra travel time during the early morning hours.
