MICHIGAN — A search is underway for a man who went missing while canoeing Friday evening in Berrien County, authorities said.
Police reported that the man was expected to be picked up from the beach at Grand Mere State Park around 6:30 p.m., but he never arrived. About an hour later, he spoke by phone with the person scheduled to pick him up and indicated he was near the Chalets on the Lake.
Witnesses at the Chalets told police they saw the man and said he did not appear to be in distress at the time.
Emergency crews, including the U.S. Coast Guard, were called to assist in the search. Police also deployed drones to help locate the canoeist. However, severe storms in the area delayed search efforts.
The missing man is described as a 6-foot-2 white male weighing approximately 250 pounds. He was last seen in a green canoe measuring about 12 to 14 feet long and equipped with a small trolling motor.
Authorities said crews planned to resume the search Saturday morning. The incident remains under investigation.
