SOUTH CAROLINA — Authorities are investigating a plane crash that occurred Friday evening near the Union County Airport.

According to officials, first responders were called to the airport on Airport Road just after 6 p.m. The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Southside Fire Department, and the South Carolina Forestry Commission all responded to the scene.

Investigators said a single-engine plane was found down in a wooded area near the airport. Forestry crews assisted in clearing trees from the crash site to allow access for emergency personnel.

Two ambulances were also dispatched, though officials have not released information on the number of people involved or the extent of any injuries.

The airport was temporarily shut down following the crash, and deputies urged the public to avoid the area while crews worked at the scene.

Authorities said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are assisting with the investigation. Officials are working to determine details about the aircraft and whether there were any passengers on board.

The incident remains under investigation, and no further information has been released at this time.
