TENNESSEE — Two people are dead following a plane crash in New Market on Monday, according to authorities.
The Federal Aviation Administration said a Beechcraft 58 crashed in a field around 1:10 p.m. There were two people on board, and the New Market Fire Department confirmed both were killed.
Emergency crews responded to the scene off Burchell Road, where firefighters first worked to contain a small brush fire caused by the crash before cooling the aircraft so investigators could begin their work.
Officials said the plane had taken off from Downtown Island Airport in Knoxville prior to the crash.
Captain Sammy Solomon with the New Market Fire Department said both occupants were deceased by the time crews arrived, noting there was “no saving them.”
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies, along with fire and EMS crews, responded to the crash after receiving a call around 1:10 p.m.
Investigators from the sheriff’s office are on scene awaiting officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Authorities said the identities of the victims have not yet been released and will be determined following an examination by the Knox County Regional Forensic Center.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
