INDIANA — A tornado watch has been issued for parts of northern Indiana as severe weather moves through the region Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Tornado Watch 90 is in effect until 11 p.m. EDT and includes three counties in northern Indiana: Elkhart, LaPorte and St. Joseph.
The watch means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in these areas. Cities impacted include South Bend, Elkhart, Mishawaka and Michigan City.
Forecasters say the watch is part of a larger severe weather system impacting portions of the Great Lakes region, including parts of Michigan.
Residents in the affected counties are urged to remain alert, monitor local weather updates and be prepared to take shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued.
Emergency officials recommend having multiple ways to receive alerts and identifying a safe location in advance in case conditions worsen.
The situation remains active and will continue to be monitored throughout the evening.
