MISSISSIPPI — Three people were arrested Monday following a narcotics investigation and foot chase in Jones County, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities said investigators and narcotics agents went to a home on Trace Road to serve a bench warrant for Stephanie Williams. When agents arrived, a man later identified as John Smith fled the residence on foot.

Deputies said Smith ran into a nearby field and began throwing suspected fentanyl from his pocket during the pursuit. Agents were able to catch him, but he briefly broke free before being taken into custody again. Officials said a bag of suspected methamphetamine was also found in his pocket.

Following the arrest, agents executed a search warrant at the home, where additional narcotics were discovered. The findings led to the arrest of the homeowner, Richard Cockrell.

All three — Williams, Smith and Cockrell — have been charged with possession of a controlled substance. Smith also faces additional charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The suspects were transported to the Jones County Adult Detention Center, where they are awaiting their first appearance in Jones County Justice Court.

The investigation remains ongoing.
