Multiple schools in Texas to close Monday

TEXAS — Many public schools across Texas are expected to be closed Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, in observance of Presidents Day, but not all districts will take the day off.

Presidents Day, officially recognized as Washington’s Birthday, is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday in February each year. In 2026, the holiday falls on Feb. 16. Federal offices, banks and many government agencies will be closed.

In Texas, however, school districts operate under locally approved academic calendars. While many of the state’s more than 1,000 public school districts traditionally schedule Presidents Day as a student holiday, others do not.

The Texas Education Agency requires districts to meet minimum instructional time requirements each school year. To meet those requirements, districts must carefully structure their calendars. Some districts designate Presidents Day as a student holiday or staff development day, while others schedule it as a regular instructional day to preserve time for other breaks or to account for possible weather-related closures earlier in the year.

In addition, some districts may use the day as a bad-weather makeup day if instruction was canceled earlier due to winter storms or other disruptions.

Charter schools and private schools in Texas set their own calendars and may follow different schedules than their surrounding public school districts.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to check with their local school district or individual campus to confirm whether classes will be held Monday.

While Presidents Day is widely observed across the state, school closures in Texas ultimately depend on decisions made by each district’s board-approved academic calendar.
