MISSISSIPPI — A Raleigh man was killed Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash involving a log truck in Jones County, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash occurred after 7:45 a.m. on Mississippi Highway 15. A 2012 Hyundai Elantra, driven by 71-year-old Douglas D. Matthews of Raleigh, was traveling north when it collided with a southbound 2024 Kenworth semi-truck hauling logs.
The Jones County Fire Council reported that the log truck rolled onto its side following the collision, sending both vehicles into a ditch. Logs and debris were scattered across the roadway, and the Hyundai caught fire after impact.
Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jones County coroner. The driver of the log truck was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries, authorities said.
Mississippi Highway 15 was temporarily shut down while first responders worked at the scene. The crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
