MISSISSIPPI — After a historic winter storm that brought widespread ice, snow, hazardous roads and prolonged cold across Mississippi, many school districts have announced closures or continued altered schedules for Thursday, January 29, 2026. The severe weather has led to extended closures in numerous areas due to road safety concerns, power outages and ongoing cleanup efforts.

Confirmed Closures and Extended Weather-Related Breaks

  • DeSoto County Schools — District will be closed Thursday, Jan. 29 as winter-weather conditions remain unsafe for travel.
  • Alcorn School District — Closed Thursday as part of extended winter weather closure plan.
  • Booneville School District — All schools closed Thursday.
  • Clarksdale Municipal School District — Closed Thursday due to ongoing hazards.
  • Cleveland School District — Closed Thursday as part of multi-day closure.
  • East Tallahatchie School District — Closed Thursday and Friday.
  • Greenville Public School District — Closed Thursday.

  • Yazoo County School District — Closed Thursday.

These closures reflect multi-day responses to the winter storm, with many districts having been closed earlier in the week and extending those closures through Thursday and often Friday as well

Additional Remote and Safety Measures

  • Northpoint Christian School and similar private schools in parts of the state had already shifted to remote learning earlier in the week due to icy conditions and are expected to keep remote instruction plans in place for Thursday.
  • Northwest Mississippi Community College campuses remain closed with virtual instruction continuing as weather impacts persist.

Reasoning Behind Decisions

State and local officials have said that icy roads, lingering snow and patches of black ice, combined with below-freezing overnight temperatures, have continued to make travel unsafe on many county and secondary roads throughout Mississippi. These conditions, along with power outages and cleanup operations, are cited as key factors in the extended closures and continued remote instruction plans.

Advice for Families

Parents and caregivers are urged to stay in close contact with their school districts via official websites or district communications systems for the latest updates, as specific decisions can change based on overnight weather forecasts and roadway assessments.
