MISSISSIPPI — A complaint about loose dogs in Lee County led authorities to the discovery of a large number of animals living in poor conditions, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Jim Johnson said a Plantersville resident contacted the sheriff’s office on Monday to report that a group of dogs had come onto her property and attacked another dog. The sheriff did not release the specific location involved.
Animal control officers responding to a nearby residence initially found between 40 and 50 dogs living in what were described as unsanitary and unsuitable conditions. As the investigation continued, officers ultimately discovered approximately 200 dogs and one horse on the property.
Johnson said many of the animals appeared to be in fair health, but the conditions they were living in were inadequate. Several dogs have already been removed from the property, and animal control officers are continuing efforts to remove the remaining animals.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials said criminal charges are possible.
