NORTH CAROLINA — A 19-year-old man was killed in a fiery crash late last night in Wilkesboro, according to local authorities.
Officers with the Wilkesboro Police Department said they responded to a collision on U.S. Highway 421 around midnight. The crash involved two vehicles — a Chevrolet passenger vehicle and a Caterpillar construction vehicle.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the Chevrolet fully engulfed in flames with the driver still inside. The driver was later identified as Dillion Mullis, 19. Officers attempted to extinguish the fire until crews from the Wilkesboro Fire Department arrived.
Mullis died from his injuries at the scene, police said.
The driver of the other vehicle was also injured but is expected to recover.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, and speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.
