WEST VIRGINIA — West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has issued a statement following the death of a coal miner in Boone County.
Steven Fields, 55, of Chauncey, WV, died after an accident Thursday morning at the Progress Surface Mine in Twilight.
The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training is investigating the incident.
“I’m deeply saddened to hear about the death of one of our brave coal miners, Steven Fields,” Morrisey said. “All West Virginians should keep Steven’s family and loved ones in our prayers.”
Morrisey praised the dedication of the state’s coal miners, calling them “the backbone of West Virginia.”
“We’re deeply indebted to these brave men and women and continue to pray for their safety,” he said.
