LEWISTON, ME — On the one-year anniversary of a mass shooting that claimed the lives of 18 individuals and injured 13 others in Lewiston, Vice President Kamala Harris issued a statement commemorating the victims and underscoring her commitment to addressing gun violence.

The tragedy, which took place at a local restaurant and bowling alley, left a lasting impact on the Lewiston community and brought national attention to the issue of gun violence.

“One year ago, an act of senseless violence carried out with a weapon of war took the lives of 18 loved ones and injured 13 others in Lewiston, Maine,” Harris said.

“Doug and I join all Mainers in remembering those who lost their lives on that fall night, standing with their families, and thinking of the survivors of this horrific mass shooting.”

Harris praised the Lewiston community’s resilience and unity, noting that their response highlighted the broader issue of gun violence in America.

“The Lewiston community has shown incredible unity, resilience, and strength,” she said. “They have reminded the nation of the unacceptable fact that far too many families have experienced the tremendous pain and trauma caused by the epidemic of gun violence.”

She emphasized the Biden administration’s efforts to address gun violence, citing the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which expanded background checks, closed the gun show loophole, and increased funding for youth mental health and community violence intervention.

Additionally, Harris announced the launch of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which she oversees, and highlighted the office’s coordinated federal response to support survivors and victims’ families in Lewiston.

Harris concluded with a call for further action.

“While we have made critical progress, there is still work to do to keep our kids and communities safe. I continue to call on Congress to pass universal background checks, red flag and safe storage laws, a ban on bump stocks, and a renewal of the assault weapons ban,” she said.

“I will continue our work to save lives and ensure that every person in our nation can live free from violence, fear, and hate.”
