OHIO — In January 1978, Ohio experienced one of the largest and most devastating snowstorms in its history, commonly referred to as the Great Blizzard of 1978.
The storm began on January 25 and intensified rapidly, bringing record snowfall and hurricane-force winds.
Accumulations ranged from 10 to 40 inches across the state, with snow drifts reaching 25 feet in some areas. Temperatures plummeted below zero, and wind chills made conditions life-threatening.
The blizzard resulted in widespread power outages, shutting down schools, businesses, and transportation networks.
Thousands of motorists were stranded on highways, and the Ohio National Guard was mobilized to assist with rescue operations.
Tragically, the storm claimed the lives of 51 Ohioans.
