PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is warning motorists about a smishing scam targeting individuals with fraudulent messages about unpaid tolls.
The scam attempts to trick recipients into providing personal financial information.
Officials advise that anyone receiving an unsolicited text, email, or similar message claiming to be from the PA Turnpike or another toll agency should avoid clicking on any links.
Instead, E-ZPass account holders and Toll By Plate customers should check their accounts only through official sources, such as the PA Turnpike E-ZPass website or the PA Toll Pay app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Victims of fraudulent messages can report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov, a resource for tracking online crimes and assisting law enforcement agencies.
