Ohio homicide suspect shot by police after refusing commands

Ohio Statewide

OHIO — A teenage homicide suspect was shot by Columbus police on Cooper Colony Drive Tuesday afternoon as officers attempted to take him into custody.

According to Sgt. Joe Albert with the Public Information Unit, the incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m.

The teen, accused of fatally shooting 39-year-old Alejandro Lopez-Lechuga, was armed with a rifle when police confronted him.

Lopez-Lechuga was killed Monday night at an apartment complex near Princess Place and Jester Lane.

Police say the teen shot him after being confronted while breaking into vehicles. Detectives later identified the teen as the suspect and linked him to a vehicle.

Officers conducted surveillance at the suspect’s residence and followed him after he left.

When a K9 officer in a marked vehicle attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the teen opened the passenger door of his car and fled down the sidewalk while holding a rifle.

At least one officer opened fire, striking the teen. Tactical medics who accompanied the officers treated him within minutes before transporting him to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.

He remains in stable but life-threatening condition.

Police recovered the rifle, which they believe was used in the homicide.

The teen will face a murder charge for Lopez-Lechuga’s death. No officers were injured during the incident.
